Design product---Final lucky bag

Lucky feature bag

  • This project I would like to made a storage bag, tailor made for myself. Every bags of my are big or small, always have some troubles about bags. So I would like  to made a bag suitable and reasonable for everyday I go to school or shopping.
  • The process of my design and the size of bag.
  • It is a scalable bag, when it open could put layout pad, like a backpack, when I don not need layout pad, I could put my daily living equipment, it can be foldable, and become shopping bag which is small, like a messenger bag.
  • Using  multiple zipper to control the shape of the package size (both sides of the package and below).

  • The different function and the lucky meaning of my bag.
  • The next year is year of sheep, it is my year in China. There are twelve Chinese zodiac in China. Next year is the second Chinese zodiac cycle for me. So I made a lucky bag for me. And I put the lucky fabrics to the opposite side of the bag, when I back this package, lucky just in my back. The shape of this bag like Chinese characters"JI""吉". The bag like two parts, but in fact it is just a bag.
  • And when I saw this bag I will  think of my mom and my grandfather. Because last year my mom made a embroidery of picture "shou" for my grandfather, it is a Chinese  character. This character means people have a long life.

  • The image is a physical model made by myself---lucky bag.

Tasks---Qualitative and Quantitative Research

Qualitative and Quantitative Research

       What is qualitative research?
  • Qualitative research is a method of inquiry employed in many different academic disciplines, traditionally in the social sciences, but also in market research and further contexts.
  • Qualitative researchers aim to gather an in-depth understanding of human behavior and the reasons that govern such behavior. The qualitative method investigates the why and how of decision making, not just whatwherewhen. Hence, smaller but focused samples are more often used than large samples.
      (Resource: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qualitative_research)

    What is quantitative research?
  • Quantitative research is the systematic empirical investigation of observable phenomena via statistical, mathematical or numerical data or computational techniques.
      (Resource: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantitative_research)
  • The objective of quantitative research is to develop and employ mathematical modelstheories and/or hypotheses pertaining to phenomena. The process of measurement is central to quantitative research because it provides the fundamental connection between empirical observation and mathematical expression of quantitative relationships. Quantitative data is any data that is in numerical form such as statistics, percentages, etc.In layman's terms, this means that the quantitative researcher asks a specific, narrow question and collects a sample of numerical data from observable phenomena or from study participants to answer the question. The researcher analyzes the data with the help of statistics. The researcher is hoping the numbers will yield an unbiased result that can be generalized to some larger population. Qualitative research, on the other hand, asks broad questions and collects word data from phenomena or participants. The researcher looks for themes and describes the information in themes and patterns exclusive to that set of participants.

               Relationship with qualitative methods
  • Qualitative methods might be used to understand the meaning of the conclusions produced by quantitative methods (why, reasons). Using quantitative methods, it is possible to give precise and testable expression to qualitative ideas (accuracy, data). This combination of quantitative and qualitative data gathering is often referred to as mixed-methods research.

What is the Difference between Qualitative and      Quantitative Research?

  • Qualitative and quantitative research is opposite.
  • Often the data presented from qualitative research will be much less concrete than pure numbers as data. Instead, qualitative research may yield stories, or pictures, or descriptions of feelings and emotions. The interpretations given by research subjects are given weight in qualitative research, so there is no seeking to limit their bias. At the same time, researchers tend to become more emotionally attached to qualitative research, and so their own bias may also play heavily into the results.

  • It will  discusses some of the underlying reasons why health researchers have historically had difficulty working collaboratively across qualitative and quantitative research paradigms and argues why it is imperative that researchers move beyond traditional adherence to particular methods of inquiry. Chronic illnesses are prime examples of conditions that by their very nature need to be studied from a combination of perspectives, using both qualitative and quantitative methods. We suggest that the success of health research on managing these conditions lies in the shared application of both qualitative and quantitative research perspectives, methods and tools.
  • Combined method research approaches are particularly suited to the study of chronic disease and long-term illness. It is especially important to recognize the benefits of widening research efforts in relation to chronic diseases.
  • Conventional biomedical research has not provided decisive information about the origins or management of the most prevalent contemporary medical problems, namely, chronic illnesses

  • Six  measures
  • TABLE 1

Potential combined uses of quantitative and qualitative methods
Reasons for using quantitative and qualitative data
    1. To develop measures
    2. To identify relevant phenomena
    3. To interpret/explain quantitative data
    4. To interpret/explain qualitative data
    5. To gain equal/parallel value from both types of data
    6. To conduct effective multistage (longitudinal) analysis

  1. The most generally accepted use of combined methods is to begin with a qualitative exploration of some little-studied problem so that measurement instruments can be developed for later quantitative research.
  2. Persons coping with chronic conditions often rely on the effectiveness of medications to relieve or at least minimize painful, debilitating symptoms.  Quantitative research has identified drugs that are effective for this pain control.   The addition of qualitative study can often more fully identify and explain side effects or problems of compliance with drug regimes experienced by people living with chronic heart disease.
  3. For example, when quantitative evidence points to a seemingly unexplained high prevalence of asthma in Alberta compared to other parts of Canada, qualitative analysis of the reasons for this is warranted.   Wainwright's study of chronic liver disease employs this approach, describing how qualitative research can lead to additional quantitative and qualitative appraisal of psychological adjustment to end-stage chronic liver disease.
  4. Sometimes, these descriptive data on how people live with a particular chronic condition appear inconsistent according to gender or age differences.  In the context of a qualitative study, both sample size and method are inadequate to test the validity of any apparent distinctions. Only quantitative study can test these findings with sufficient and appropriate sampling.
  5. Truly combined method approaches would purposely connect the study objectives and methodologies in the context of a single study or within a planned program of research in order to access a more comprehensive range of information and experience.
  6. So, for example, a survey of persons living with HIV/AIDS, aimed at quantifying the difference that new treatments are making in relation to longevity, might be planned in the context of a follow-up study focused on qualitatively assessing changes in quality of life.   These study phases could, in turn, be followed by an experimental intervention designed to compare the efficacy of two different treatment regimes, over time and in relation to length and quality of life.

Design product---Waterproof Fabric

    The survey about waterproof fabric

             (Nottingham Blacks outdoors)

  • In this store, almost products (clothes, shoes) use Gore Tex and HyVent. They are durable waterproof, truly windproof and highly breathable. The clothes of HyVent is enough for city walk, but the material of Gore Tex is more breathable than HyVent, if you often go hiking, the highly breathable is important.
       (Information source :http://www.tiso.com/ask_expert/fabric_guides/)

  • The material of bag is use waterproof nylon.

  • The design of zipper is sealed waterproof. It is YKK zipper (a company of Japan which made zipper).

Design product---Detail of the bag inside

The inside and outside of bag
(some special pocket what I need to consider)
  • Some situation of my bag. (problems)

  • The pockets are too big or not suitable.

  •  Too mess sometimes.

  • Inside of bags.

  • Storage bags: the bag is only suitable for home, can not get out. But it is useful which I could use the structure of bag to design my bag, think about which part suitable for different stuff.

  • Safe precautions about bag.

  • This is a security system from a company. Design for bag.

  • Isothermic bags
The research of Isothermic bags for my water cup. In winter, it could let       my cup keeping warm or keeping cold in summer.

  •  The fabric:   Inner layer: reflective sheet.
  •  Middle layer: Insulation fibre.
  •  Outer layer: PVC sheet.

  • Some glasses bag pictures, design the part of my bag.

  • I enjoy the shape and fabric of glasses bag which could protect my glasses.

  • I think the shape of red glasses box is good but could not protect glasses avoid press.

  • This is nice for glasses, but can not put in bag, include the material, occupy more space.

  • umbrella bag picture (Must be waterproof)

  • I would like use the shape and material inside of my bag.

  • This equipment could collect water what the umbrella left. It is convenient but difficult to carry.

  • Phone bag picture (Must be waterproof)

  • This product could make me use phone whenever the weather is rain or snow.

  • The introduction of different zippers.

  • Metal zipperA separating zipper is designed much like a conventional zipper, with two strips of sturdy fabric studded with small metal or plastic teeth that can be joined together to make a seal.
  •  Nylon zipper:  In some cases, active wear jackets come with removable sleeves that detach with a zipper. This means that the jacket can double as a vest.
  • Plastic ZipperThe teeth or coils are formed of metal, plastic,or synthetic material. A separating zipper is designed much like a conventional zipper, with two strips of sturdy fabric studded with small metal or plastic teeth that can be joined together to make a seal.

  • Invisible zippers, like conventional zippers, have the two strips of fabric connected at one end, but the zipper tape itself covers the zipper mechanism. They have top and bottom stops, visible only on the reverse side.
  • Separating zippers are designed with a unique type of bottom stop so that the fabric tapes come apart, allowing, for example, the two sides of the front of a winter jacket to be separated for ease of use. The user inserts the bottom stop at the bottom of one fabric tape into the slider, which is on the other tape, thereby joining the two sides of the base together. The user then pulls the slider up to close the zipper. Most zippers have a differentiated front and back, buttwo-sided zippers were developed for items that are reversible, and are designed to be equally workable from either side.

Design product---Flexible Bag

Design Product for youself (Duration-3 Weeks)
Flexible bag

                       (SOURSE : http://archivebag.com/backpack.html)
  • The style of design is simple, and  a main compartment combined with a front pocket, this backpack is just for daily use, it is a normal bag, but the advantage of this bag is the roll top which can increase activity space of the package and have secure roll top closure.

  • The bag material is closed cell foam, so there is 1/2 thick foam in the shoulder straps and in a back panel. The loops on the bottom rear of the pack were a special request to hold her yoga mat. It came out very nicely and is seeing daily use. But this bag is not suitable for me, I don't use yoga mat, I want put my layout pad in my bag, and the shape of bag what I don't like. If it is possible I would like the bag sometimes become a handbag when I go shopping.

(SOURSE : http://www.thebirdwheel.com/mer-bags)
  • 3.The one with pockets looks like an old man’s tool bag, but so modern. If the colors were different I could see it as a woman’s bag, with all the accessory pockets on the outside. But this bag can not back. Blue is my favorite color, but match gray which is out of fashion,

  • This is pop out eco bag, sustainability and fashion. And it is an excellent eco friendly idea and trendy too. This roomy and soft bag has long shoulder straps; it folds into itself with a sturdy zipper, with the clover shaped leather bottom of the bag becoming the cover. This bag is small and convenient, keep one always with you and you will be ready to shop with them. When folded into itself it is a cool leather“pochette”. It is stylish and conveniently folds up it is small enough to stow in a purse or backpack. The combinations of colors are fun and unexpected and it is made in Italy.

  • This is a handmade clutch bag. It is foldable and scalable.  The bag which is colorful and carry easily. But the trouble are couldn't become backpack and reduce weight.

  • This bag used zipper could be stretch, and expand space.I like the shape of bag but color. The zipper make the bag fixable to change, but it is not  more useful for my layout pad, if I would like to put it in.
